Photo maxing: lighting, angles, and lens choice

6 min read

How to take better photos without deception: light direction, camera distance, expression, and background.

Most bad photos are lighting and lens problems, not face problems. Harsh overhead light creates shadows under the eyes and nose, while soft window light from the front or side usually looks cleaner.

Avoid close wide-angle selfies when judging your face. A phone held too close can distort the nose, jaw, and forehead. Step back and use a timer or ask someone to take the photo.

Angles should be subtle. Turn the face slightly, keep the neck long, relax the mouth, and avoid forcing expressions that do not match your natural look.

Background matters because clutter lowers perceived quality. A simple wall, outdoor shade, or clean room will usually outperform a busy mirror selfie.
